Have you watched the movie “Substance”?
Well, I read very different opinions about it. And it made me think.
In my view it is super grotesque, maybe a bit too much, but it has very important point: we are who we are, and even with external appearance and circumstances being fluid and constantly changing it is very important to find that own “core” to rely on, otherwise the result may be terrifying.
In the movie the main character was very dependent on external valuation, and basically could not see her own personality/value outside of the usual context where acceptance by the audience was everything. She was lost as soon as this was taken away. The change of appearance did not make her happy either as this was almost like drinking from the hose – never enough.
However, we can find that inner core to rely on – we will always be with ourselves – cannot run away or hide. So why not to use it to our own advantage?
We can adjust the surroundings to make us feel differently: i.e. dressing up for the occasion can highlight certain angle of our personality and behaviour (trekking boots and a long hike to feel strong, or black-tie dress and shoes to feel classy). We still stay the same but are in control of our own perception of reality.
What is your relationship with your inner self?
