About routines

Writer: AnastasiaAnastasia

What do you think about routines? What is your relationship with predictable flow of the day?

Routines are actually pretty good – when we are growing kids having predictable routines create sense of safety and allow to free up a lot of energy for exploration and learning new things.

Same pattern stays when we are adults, however I think there is a bit of a trick.

The following is solely based on my opinion and observations:

for example, during school year there is a very clear routine for the whole family that is normally built around school schedule and afterschool activities. We get used to the schedule and barely notice it, it does not require much thinking as the schedule is hanging on the fridge and all reminders are in the phone. Even if this routine is cumbersome as soon as we decided that this is the right thing to do we stick to it, get used to it and create a predictable flow that becomes almost automatic.

And now school holidays start!

And all predictability is in the bin, we need to figure out something new. I can almost feel how my brain works. And here comes creativity and new solutions.

So it looks like routine is a very good thing when we need to free up “brain time”, but if we want to get into some sort of thinking disruption sometimes it is helpful to make a change and build new neuron connections in a different setup. That’s why travelling can be very helpful – change of routines and scenery.

What do you think?
